Dear Members,
The Friends of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge have made tremendous progress since its inception as a 501c3 nonprofit corporation in 2000. The Friends have accomplished most of the goals outlined in its 2008 Strategic Plan, including the development of strong programs in education, habitat restoration, the Chinookan Plankhouse, and BirdFest. We have our members to thank for continuing support and involvement with the Friends.
The Friends goal for the next three years is to continue its focus on providing educational opportunities for children and adults through programs associated with the Plankhouse, BirdFest, and habitat restoration and to support continued efforts to improve habitat on the refuge. With your help we have provide bus money for 5,000 students to visit the Plankhouse and receive instruction in environmental science and history. We have planted over 2,400 native trees and shrubs on the refuge and helped to remove many invasive species. BirdFest has grown into a regional event and in 2011 attracted over 3,000 visitors to the refuge. We had over 1,900 volunteer hours valued at approximately $31,000 as match for grant funding.
We are grateful to our members and volunteers. However, it takes cash to run our programs and offer the great learning and outdoor experiences the Friends are responsible for. We need your help. Cuts in federal grant funding have jeopardized our ability to sustain operations at the Plankhouse. We are projecting a $25,000 shortfall for the last three quarters of 2012.
Kick off the New Year by making a pledge to help us build and support the important programs at the Plankhouse. Help us raise the $25,000 we need this year to continue to operate and grow our educational programs at the Plankhouse.
